Light divide

Simon, Sonia and their family brought to SAGO the challenge of transforming their tired 1930s bungalow on a steeply sloping site into a three-level contemporary home filled with natural light.

Architecture: SAGO Design

Construction: AJP

The SAGO team's solution was to adaptively reuse as much of the original fabric of the house as possible while still transforming the home beyond recognition. Costs were kept to a minimum by constructing a three-storey structure with virtually no new footings.

Natural light now cascades throughout the centre of the home via a narrow light well that hovers over the entry hallway, flooding what would otherwise be a cavernous space with luminous space. Box elements now frame private, green views to the front and the back, creating definition and focus for the new structure.
