Light Release

Light Release is a top-to-tail rethink of a 1970s beach-side apartment for a newly married couple, transforming a small and dated space into a first home for their future family. Ben and Steph gave us a brief to maximise the liveability of the very small unit which had been segmented with walls and suffered from poor space planning.

The design approach knocked down all extraneous walls, increasing the sense of space and minimising structures to create a blank slate upon which to rethink the apartment around the clients' needs. Through the clever reuse of power and plumbing locations and integrating the laundry into the kitchen, the space was opened up to let daylight stream into the living room.

The outcome is a comfortable two-bedroom apartment with increased light, increased kitchen bench space and increased storage that can become a real home to accompany this couple into the next chapter of their life together.
